Career Counsellors

Still unsure of what type of career to pursue? If you are, then you probably need to hire the services of career counsellors. Career counsellors are professional advisors who provide formal career intervention services to help you rediscover the career path you have to pursue. Helping people figure out what they want to do with their careers is not an easy task. To make sure that they provide only the best career advice, career counsellors are thoroughly educated and trained in the fields of psychology and sociology.

How career counseling is performed

Career counsellors have their own way of counseling, but their techniques all include an assessment of their respective subject. To get to know you better, career counsellors administer tests that focus on your personality and interests. Learning about your personality and interests is very important because it helps career counsellors identify your needs and expectations in life. To verify the results of the test, career counsellors also initiate discussions to ask you about your family background, educational attainment and employment history. After a thorough assessment of your individuality, career counsellors will then help you rediscover the person inside you.

The job of career counsellors doesn't stop with helping you get re-acquainted with yourself. They are, after all, experts in career planning and not self-discovery. Because they have a knack for identifying which career option works for you best, career counsellors have the ability to present a list of all career options that are suitable for you; career counsellors will lay out all your options, provide an overview of each one and explain why they may work for you. After you decide on which career to pursue, career counsellors will then assist you in devising a plan for career success.

Why career counsellors are needed

Consulting career counsellors is an effective way of rediscovering your interests, preferences and ideals. Life has its way of distracting you from following your ideals or pursuing your dreams that you end up not knowing what you really want. Through proper career counseling, you will have a better understanding of what you are and a clearer vision of what you want to be. Career counsellors only help you discover what you want and what you need. Although they also give you professional advice on how to achieve your goals in life, career counsellors are not the ones to blame if you ever fail to succeed. After all, pursuing what you want and getting what you need are two different things.

Roles For School Counsellors In Reducing Prisoner Numbers

11 December 2008

I HAVE been a school counsellor in the NSW public education system for more than 30 years.
